Fast fillies shine in Hollywood maiden

June 1, 2009

Mi Sueno (Pulpit-Madcap Escapade, by Hennessy), the first foal out of a popular racemare, made her debut today at Hollywood Park and finished a fast-closing second in a high-class maiden field.

The race winner, Necessary Evil (Harlan’s Holiday-Song And Danze, by Unbridled’s Song) set a new track record of :56.58 for the five furlongs. Mi Sueno was fifth in midstretch but rallied to be second by about two lengths.

The 2-year-old filly’s dam, Madcap Escapade, won seven of nine starts and earned over a million dollars. She won the grade I Ashland Stakes, as well as five other graded stakes.

Also in the field was Ghost Shadow (Ghostzapper-Gracious Living, by Pleasant Colony), the first starter for 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper. She finished off the board.

Say hello to Brother Bird

May 29, 2009

Dogwood Stable purchased a 2-year-old half-brother to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird at the Fasig-Tipton Midatlantic Sale on May 18.

Dogwood paid $485,000 for the unraced colt, who has been named Brother Bird and will be trained by Todd Pletcher.

Both Mine That Bird and Brother Bird are out of the mare Mining My Own (Smart Strike-Aspenelle, by Vice Regent). Mine That Bird is a son of 2004 Belmont winner Birdstone (Grindstone-Dear Birdie, by Storm Bird) while Brother Bird is sired by Yonaguska (Cherokee Run-Marital Sppok, by Silver Ghost).

Yonaguska is also the sire of Derby and Preakness third-place finisher Musket Man.
